Alec Syme is the owner and CEO of FUSE. He’s been in this industry creating 3D images since 1993 and studied commercial art at the Minnesota College of Art and Design and Hennepin Technical Institute. After years of creating 3D artwork and doing hands-on project work, Alec now manages the business and deals with finances. Being the “numbers guy” now, Alec has found that he really enjoys the business side of running a company.
Of FUSE’s many projects, Alec’s favorite work is the more creative (and weirder) projects we typically get through ad agencies. He really enjoys anything that pushes the artists at FUSE to try something new and exciting.
Ben is the Director of Business Development at FUSE. In his role here, he manages accounts and our marketing strategy. He’s been working in sales for creative services for 8 years now and has over 12 years of sales experience. Ben went to college at the University of Minnesota in Mankato, where he studied Communications and Marketing. Music is his favorite type of art.
Chris is the Executive Producer at FUSE. He’s been working in the 3D industry since 1998, with a background in computer animation, special effects, and traditional graphic design. Of the wide variety of projects we take on, Chris particularly enjoys the work FUSE does in the medical industry. Though he used to oil paint and sculpt, Chris now spends his free time outside of work painting miniatures for various war games. His favorite artists are Francis Bacon, Bill Sienkiewicz, and Mike Mignola.
Shawn is a 3D artist and project manager and handles data management at FUSE. He began working with FUSE after graduating from the Art Institutes of Minnesota, where he studied 3D animation and received a BA in Computer Science. He has 9 years of professional industry experience. Shawn is in charge of all jobs coming from Zurn, one of our largest manufacturing clients. This work includes tracking project hours, managing work schedules, and maintaining a positive relationship with Zurn.
Favorite project types include ones with technical animations, like assembly animations or blow apart product shots. He’s recently enjoyed working on projects involving particles and other simulations. When not at work, Shawn likes to build things with his hands and is kept busy keeping his two boys entertained with sports, art projects, and spending time at their cabin. Beyond that, he spends time on woodworking projects, like building a tree fort or doing work around his home.
Ben is a senior animator and project lead at FUSE. He’s been working in this industry professionally since 2012, after graduating from the Arts Institutes International Minnesota, where he earned a B.S. in Animation. At FUSE, Ben is responsible for creating visuals that match clients’ ideas and visions by building models, animating, lighting, and rendering. As a project lead, he coordinates artist collaboration on projects to deliver cohesive results to clients.
At work, Ben’s favorite projects are those that involve designing and building characters. Going beyond just creating a realistic image of something, he enjoys imbuing objects with personality, or creating and sculpting new characters or creatures. Outside of work, Ben’s free time is taken up with creating clay sculptures and modeling characters for real-time game engines.
Levi Krippner is FUSE’s senior rendering specialist and has 5 years of industry experience. He attended The Art Institutes, where he studied Media Arts and Animation. The projects he enjoys most at FUSE are those that showcase new technologies and products.
Phong has been working in the 3D industry for six years and is a generalist at FUSE, meaning he does a bit of everything. He also leads FUSE’s VR and AR development. Phong attended the Arts Institute International Minnesota, where he studied Media Arts and Animation.
Though he doesn’t have a favorite type of work project, Phong has always enjoyed photorealism, an outlook that lends itself well to what we do at FUSE. Being particularly fond of the technical side of his work, Phong loves projects that both look incredible and are also technically impressive. In personal projects, he leans toward exploring real time art and lately has been designing things for 3D printing.
Rachel is an animator at FUSE, though at work she goes wherever she’s needed, whether that’s rendering, modeling, or rigging. Rachel got her start in the 3D industry right here – as a FUSE intern. She attended Northern Michigan University, where she planned to study Microbiology. With some guidance and encouragement from professors in the art department, she switched majors. She received an Art and Design degree with a concentration in Computer Art, which focused on 3D modeling and animation.
Her favorite types of artwork need to satisfy two requirements: there needs to be a story-telling element and it needs to challenge her, which she admits is a double-edged sword. For example, she’ll often come up with concepts without knowing exactly how to bring them to life. Though it can be frustrating, ultimately overcoming these challenges lets her build the creative problem-solving skills and techniques she uses for FUSE projects.
Zak is a 3D Generalist/Junior Artist at FUSE. Though he has experience in all aspects of 3D production, he specializes in lighting, texturing, and photorealistic rendering. Zak is a self-taught 3D artist who relied heavily on YouTube tutorials and other online sources to develop the skills he now uses every day at FUSE. Though new to the industry, with only two years of professional experience, Zak dedicates himself to learning everything he can.
Always looking to learn and expand that skillset, Zak does a lot of 3D work outside of FUSE. He also enjoys creating traditional art using charcoal or pen, ranging from abstract work to industrial design or landscapes. Favorite art projects of his include anything related to industrial design, science fiction, and environmental design. Much of his 3D work both at FUSE and outside of work is done with Blender, Substance Designer, and ZBrush.
Shae is a copywriter at FUSE. Her role is to manage the website and SEO content strategy, social media accounts, and FUSE’s blog. She has over 6 years of professional content writing experience and two years of marketing experience. Shae attended the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities, where she earned a BA in English with a focus on creative writing and publishing. Outside of work, her favorite type of art project is fiction writing. Shae is a published short story writer and writes design-inspired stories for an independent clothing line.
